Napa Wineries

When visiting Napa wineries make sure to plan on a lunch and to see around three to five wineries. The Larger wineries tend to have more extensive facilities and tours, however the smaller wineries can provide you with a more personal experience.

Highway 29, north of the City of Napa is where most wineries are concentrated. To really enjoy the wine country you may want to think of staying over for real fun & relaxation.

If you can, avoid weekends when it is extremely busy. Also be advised that Napa Valley is much warmer than San Francisco, so dress accordingly.

More of the commercial bigger wineries are located in Napa Valley. The quality of wine in each valley can very. Napa valley tends to be more world renowned. Napa County is located north of San Francisco.

Parts of the county’s territory were given to Lake County in 1861. The word napa is of Native American derivation and has been variously translated as “grizzly bear”, “house”, “motherland”, and “fish”.

Napa is home to some 400 plus wineries. Within that area, there are reported to be 45,000 acres of vineyards planted. Cabernet Sauvignon is king in Napa Valley covering a total of 18,200 acres, and Chardonnay is the most widely planted white wine variety covering 7,300 acres. It is said that Napa produces about five percent of the total California wine.
